Killer hail…
May 29th, 2007
Yes it’s true… well that’s what our neighbor claims anyway. He is building a house on a 5 acre lot over at Sonterra, and he says that bunnies were driven out of their burrows due to flooding, and then they were visciously pummeled to death by the hail. I’m glad I wasn’t there to see it.
It sorta makes me wonder what I’d do if (when?) I get caught out in some hail… some places there is nowhere to take shelter. Being a somewhat larger creature than a bunny I suppose I won’t be damaged very severely…
Drugs in sports. It’s been a hot topic on the forums lately, what with Zabel and Riis confessing to doping many many years ago. I get the impression that most people are in denial and just wish it would all go away so they can pretend that doping doesn’t exist. It is a predicament, that’s for sure. I still think that honesty and understanding will be necessary to go forward… even if the truth isn’t pretty.

Isn’t that pretty? Nice set of cranks for $40 IMO. OK… they are a little heavy… now my “19lb in racing trim” bike has gained an extra 100g. But it isn’t like 100g is going to matter much in the grand scheme of things. If I get within striking distance of winning a race sometime, I’ll think about putting my bike on a diet.
So… I’ve done a few rides. I don’t feel terrible, but I *do* feel like I have a bad cold when I’m riding… which takes a lot of the fun out of it. Oddly enough I set a world record (personal best) the other day on one of my loops, and the wind wasn’t even helping… although it wasn’t evil like usual. A few days before I’d tried it and had the worst time ever by a large margin… 1:45:15 compared to 1:26:00 before Gila! But the wind… not only was a headwind following me around, it eventually escalated to 30mph with 50mph gusts when I got to the mesa over by the airport. Winds like that take a lot out of me. Four days later on a relatively calm day I managed a 1:25:57… that’s a huge difference!
